Electric Power Associations of Mississippi
Youth Leadership Program
Alcorn County Electric Power Association, in an effort to better acquaint the future leaders of our communities with cooperative philosophy, participates with other electric cooperatives in Mississippi in a statewide youth leadership program. Our youth leadership Program is designed to provide participants with an opportunity to learn about electric power associations, how and why cooperatives operate, and how electricity is distributed, in addition to sharpening their leadership skills.
Program Goals
The Electrical Power Associations of Mississippi Youth Leadership Program offers young people the tools and knowledge that will enable them to sharpen their leadership skills in the: Classroom, Community, Church and Family.
Students selected to participate in the Electric Power Associations youth program will attend a three-day workshop in Jackson. The program focuses on developing the leadership skills of high school students who have demonstrated a desire to be quality leaders among today's natural leaders. It is the desire of this program to enhance these talents and provide advanced skills to help them as they prepare to be tomorrow's leaders.
The group of young Mississippians participating in the program will represent electric power associations across the state. Students are selected through various forms of intense competition conducted by the local associations.
Leadership Workshop
Students will attend a leadership workshop in Jackson where they will study the finer aspects of leadership, enjoy a first-hand look at out state government in action and hear presentations from government leaders, local business leaders and rural electric power association professionals.
Washington, D.C., Youth Tour
Each June more that 1200 high school juniors from across the nation join the Mississippi delegation and travel to Washington, D.C., for the Rural Electric Youth Tour. During the week, they learn about the city, government, cooperatives and rural electrification.
During the week-long trip, Mississippi's student delegation will visit the popular monuments and memorials, the nation's Capitol (including visits to the galleries of the House of Representatives and Senate), the White House and much more. They will participate in a group visit with Mississippi's two senators and office visits with their respective representative. Students will also attend an exciting performance at the Kennedy Center and witness the popular changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetery.
